Hyperbolic paraboloid wind-proof Rain and Shade cover

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: TomSawyerLabs

Home: California, United States

Do you need a shade structure for a BIG project, event, or Burningman camp? This is a do-it-yourself project that any group can make out of off-the-shelf components. The Hyperbolic paraboloid "saddle" shape is easy to achieve and has special properties. A 40’ square flat tarp could be a disaster in windy conditions. The uplift force is enough to lift the whole tarp and slam it back down. But the downward corners of the saddle prevent this from happening. If it rains, all of the water is directed to these same two low points.

How did we get into movies with the odds stacked against us? We will share our stories of how we got into movies and show you how we snuck into the movie industry.

Playtime with Crappy Happy Robots

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Crappy Happy Robots

Home: California, United States

Come play with our robot friends as they try to flap and wave and spin around. Maybe they don’t always “work”, but they do always play. This year the (Very Small) Robot Choir is returning, along with new and old rolling friends in the robot playpen, in addition to some new jellyfish friends in their own eternal ocean. Program your own unique tiny robot musical performance by coloring in a paper grid, play with robots in the playpen by tilting their controllers, or gaze into a mysteriously deep aquarium with undulating robotic jellyfish. Our goal is to show kids that there is more to robotics than battle bots and race cars (as cool as they are), because we think that if more young artists grow up and build silly goofy robots in sweaters the world will be a better place.

The Ghost EV

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: jeff kotowski

Home: California, United States

This is a very high efficiency electric vehicle built from the ground up. It seats two people in tandem for a very low CD (coefficient of drag) and a small cross section. The Ghost uses only 18KWh of batteries but gets 100 miles per charge in real world driving and even more on pure highway driving. This has an AC motor, regenerative braking and lithium batteries. It is street legal, registered and insured. The body is made of an aluminum nose in the front and a wood strip for the rest. The goal was to make a modern retro design reminiscent of the 1920's Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Most people like fast sports cars, but I prefer highly efficient, practical designs that can be made at a low cost.

ArtAtomic

In addition to works on paper, she also works with other media, like computer projections, textiles, wearable art. This exhibit will show many of these. For those familiar with the GalaxyGoo’s Cell Project workshops at past Maker Faires, she will also be bringing pre-made organelle models, so that you can make 3D models of cells at home.
