3D-Printed Electric Marble Mazes

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Gualala Gadget

Home: California, United States

We have a variety of battery-powered 3D printed marble machines that we'd like to exhibit. Each model is 3D printed using PLA plastic on consumer FDM printers. This takes anywhere from six to fifteen hours, depending on each model's size and complexity. A model is made from two to seven PLA parts, which are inspected and cleaned of any residual plastic that's a byproduct of the printing process. (None of the models require support material, which simplifies the cleaning process). Once the PLA parts are prepared they, along with the electric parts are assembled into complete models. There's no painting — the plastic is the color it appears. The models are designed in Blender. They use a variety of different mechanisms to lift the marbles.

Kind Humanoid Mona, making the chatGPT Moment for robots

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Christoph Kohstoll

Home: United States

THE TALK: I will share my thoughts that went into designing the body of a humanoid robot that reaches human level strength and speed, that is extremely lightweight, and that is highly compliant. I will share my approach on how to leverage LLMs to choose actions. I'd also love to discuss how these new capabilities can help humans in the future. THE PROJECT: At Kind Humanoid we build Intelligent humanoid robots to do the work we don’t do, but should do. We have built a low-cost humanoid robot body with human level motion performance from scratch and we are integrating multimodal LLMs into the humanoid's brain so it can reason about arbitrary tasks. See the prototype in action. Going forward, such an embodied intelligence will allow us to broaden access to health/elderly care, build products in more sustainable ways, and build out the renewable energy system.

Freehand Fabricator: An industrial-grade 3D pen.

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Timothy Keller

Home: California, United States

The Freehand Fabricator is what you would get if a 3D printer and a MIG welder had a baby. It is a high-temperature, high-flow 3D printer hot end with a comfortable handle and spool-fed extruder base station. People who have used '3D pens' know how slow they are, and how quickly they break. This is the solution those makers have been waiting for: the Freehand Fabricator is capable of extruding engineering-grade plastics and is more than twice as fast as existing solutions. The project is in the late prototyping stage at the moment and will be launched on Kickstarter in the coming months. We are currently looking for people to play with the prototypes and tell us what they think!

We also sell subscription boxes for the ongoing maker experience and provide events for people to come to make a project with us at local bars and restaurants.
