Sailing to the Moon in Search of Water
Home: California, United States
Sailing to the Moon in Search of Water is a game changer for manned and unmanned missions to moon and beyond. Water is a critical substance for life and propellant.. FLEA (Femto Lunar Exploration Apparatus) is a low cost mission to deliver multiple passive seismic sensors on the lunar surface at greater frequency and covering more areas like the poles and far side of the moon. There are 3 main components to this program a Mothership, 4 solar Sails , each carrying a dozen Femto Landers or FLEAs. The Mothership when on orbit will deploy the sails. Traveling to and from the moon the sails will take advantage of the lunar and solar phase. On approach to moon the sail will release the FLEAs to create pattern of on the lunar surface. Data from the FLEAs is relayed t by the Sails

What Inspired You to Make This?
Maker Faire has been a great catalyst in my space career and projects! After showing a 3D printed cube satellite at Maker Faire I was hired by NASA Ames to help with set up Space Shop aa a NASA Maker space. While there I designed hundreds of parts for dozens of missions. These include Phonesat, Kicksat 1&2and the MADE IN SPACE 3D printer flown on the International Space Station. For the Asteroid Grand Challenge I made models of the Asteroid hunting spacecraft and the asteroids they found or explored and presented them at Maker Faire NY. These projects led to collaboration with Cornell' University Space Systems Design Studio and the creations of the ALPHA Sail project to prove the versatility of small sail weighing less than a Hot Wheels car. For SSDS I am project PI on 2 programs and mentor 5 projects. One Project "Femto Satellites in Zero Gravity was the winner of a contest judged by the late Grant Imahara and Astronaut Chris Hatfield and was 3D printed and investigated on the ISS. The technology from this experiment is enabling the FLEA Femto Lander to be delpoyed from the Sail in a controlled and stabilized manner.
